Too Late to transplant mature Iris?

Posted by MercuryButterfly Tennessee (My Page) on

Tomorrow is the 1st of October and I realized I intended to transplant half of my large Iris brood to the other side of the garden to even out the mass. These are very old native TN purple Iris and bloom beautifully so I do not want to endanger them.

Is it too late in the year now to transplant for Memphis area?

Thank You!

You probably won't have any hard freezes until the end of November or into December, will you? Those old iris are pretty tough. They should be fine and actually like being thinned.

I know for a fact that the Memphis Iris Society is having it's sale this coming weekend. You should be fine if you move them now. But I wouldn't wait to much longer.

Thank you for the encouraging replies, I have transplanted them and they should be fine for the coming winter and fresh blooming next spring. They really did need thinning out and were crowded. Thanks! =)
