cut iris stem now?

Hi, I planted my order from Schreiners this past July and everything looks good, getting new green growth on all. Just yesterday, I noticed a flower stem coming up with buds. Do I cut it, since it was newly planted?, or let it bloom. Thanks cindy

I would cut it off if it looks like frost is coming. Do you think it has time to flower before frost?

Thanks Renee, It probably will bloom, my thinking was that since it is newly planted that I should cut it like we do on the daylilies that send up scapes right after being planted in order to encourage stronger root growth. I have never had an iris send up a stem like this in the fall, and this is not a rebloomer.

Hi dlpsych. I have the same situation. I know that Monday night---Tuesday weather is going to drop to 37 at night. Very low tempatures for this early in the fall.

I have 4 rebloomers that I just planted this summer sending up stalks. One is about to bloom, and the others are about a week or two away.

I plan on taking tall yard waste bags and rolling the ends under and placing them over the stalks at night. I am hoping this cold snap will be followed by an indian summer and they can finish their bloom.

I don't think I could ever force myself to cut a budded stem, if there was any chance of seeing it bloom late in the season.

I see one I planted late last fall, that didn't bloom this spring is finally budded for bloom. It's a rebloomer named 'Dashing' and I'm anxiously awaiting seeing it in bloom for the first time.

Don't cut it unless you are going to have a heavy frost or freeze. That rhizome will never bloom again if you cut or not.

If you let it bloom be sure to cut it after bloom is over. Cutting could even promote more increase.

Thanks everyone, I didn't cut it and today I had a nice surprise. This is Best Bet. Glad I didn't cut it.
