Transplanting in November

kmtod1

I have two types of rhizome irises, they were my Grandmother's and Mother's originally. We have purchased a new home just down the road but are not closing until November. I really would like to bring the irises to my new home but do not know the best way to do so. The options I have considered are:

1. Dig up a few rhizomes now (Sept) - store them until the spring and replant them, hoping they don't die in the meantime.

2. Dig them up in Nov, and transplant right away, mulch them heavily and potentially cover them with clear plastic to make a greenhouse like area.

3. Come back in the spring and ask the owners if I can take a few, we could write it into the selling contract, but I worry that they will somehow destroy them.

4. Dig them up and plant them in a pot until the spring time next year, keeping them in the house/basement/garage?

Any other ideas?

Thank you so much, I would really hate to lose to family generations of irises!
