| Howdy doo! I haven't posted on this forum in a while, so I thought I'd update with the progress of my deep south iris experiment. Unfortunately, I'm a bit behind due to Gustav cleanup and related complications. We're on the waiting list for our fence to be rebuilt, and as the iris beds were to be built in front of the fence, I would prefer not to construct them until after all the men come trampling through my backyard with boards. I don't want to crush my new babies! We may have to rethink that plan if our name doesn't come up pretty soon on the list though... it got down to 49 degree last night, so I'm getting a bit nervous about not having my babies in the ground yet.
This is a pic of where the irises have been enjoying their late summer and early fall... my "iris nursery" so to speak. So far, only 6 rhizomes have given up the ghost. Considering I thought I'd lose about 1/2, I believe it's going pretty well. That stack of cinder blocks and pavers you see in the background is construction materials for the new beds. Ev

| Irisqueen, I was bit, and bit HARD!!!! I'm excited with the progress, and I'll definitely be posting photos. I appreciate all the help I've received for the lovely people on this forum. Without their help, I'd probably be sitting here with a bunch of piles of rot by now! |

| WOW - how beautifully organized you are! They are looking great! You said you were nervous when the temp got down to 49 ~ I grow my iris in pots year 'round and they freeze & thaw without harm here in Z8 Oregon... Thanks for sharing your photo! Marea |

| Thanks for that info, Marea! I was getting nervous because these guys are still in their pots while we finish up the beds... and we're getting an unexpected cold front tomorrow. The temp was 76 degrees today, but we're going down to 50 tonight and down to 37 tomorrow night. That's crazy for Louisiana in October. The cold nights are expected to stick around until next week. Between the irises, all my new roses bushes, and some succulents I picked up, I've got my hands full trying to protect it all. What I wouldn't give for a greenhouse (and the space to put it) right now! Ev |
