Too late to divide iris in zone 4?

We just moved into a house last fall where I have a small flowerbed full of iris, bearded iris and a tremendous amount of weeds and unwanted plants (I just sort of let things go this summer to see what came up). Lots of good blooms off the iris, though they are pretty thick. I had planned to wait for some cooler weather in September, then dig up the whole bed, divide & replant the iris (interplanting with tulips). It's been unusually hot this year, and suddenly it's mid October and I haven't followed through. Can I still dig them up & replant, or would it be better to just try and dig out the plants I don't want and leave the iris alone? Winters here tend to be pretty brutal. I even read that zone 4 should divide in spring, but I don't want to forgo a season of bloom... what to do?
