Has this happened to you? SBI blooming now

In the fall of 2010, I divided and transplanted some short bearded iris to new beds. This spring, they grew, with no blooms.
On October 11th, I noticed stalks and blooms on several of the ones I transplanted in 2010.
Is this typical for SBI to bloom so late in the season? I don't know the name of this one but typically these bloom in late spring. These are the only ones of the 3 colors I transplanted that is blooming so late.

I have one that has a nice full sized flower stalk. Buds are still small so depending on if the weather stays warm and we don't get a frost, it might bloom. Will have to check my garden map to see who it is.

Congratulations! You have rebloomers! It has been an unusually warm fall here in Canada's western prairies and from what I have heard, out where you are too. I'm not surprised you have reblooms! :) Ginny

Rebloomers? I wouldn't have thought that since they didn't bloom earlier in the season. Learned something new. Julia

Well, ok not rebloomers but they would be on their second bloom if they had bloomed in the spring. They probably just got messed up from moving them. That would be my guess. I had an iris bloom in a 5 inch pot in August because it had been sitting in a bag in a barn all winter and I planted it in June from a shriveled up root. It was odd but I guess nature just told it to bloom then . Bearded iris usually only bloom in the spring here in zone 4 but some will rebloom in the fall. I have only had that happen twice. From what I have heard some will rebloom in zones 5/6 much more easily. So your's may be a rebloomer next year. :) Ginny

Based on your pictures, and your description of the iris as short, what you probably have is the variety Crimson King (collected by Barr in 1893). It's a vigorous grower and rebloomer here in the San Francisco bay area.

Thank you Jean. I now have a name for this one. I have several bearded iris which I have no idea what the names are. All I can say is they all seem to multiply like rabbits here. Julia
