I Found My Southern Iris !!!!

I found out that I have a 'Neomarica Caerulia Regina'. I found it listed in a file I had that I totally forgot about. It had a list of plants that I buy online. Well I know the iris I have,....but I dont know the type of iris I have. A walking iris, a woodland iris, a Louisiana iris? What kind,. I have Louisiana iris stuck in my mind. The bloom is nearly as big as the bearded iris from up north, unlike the tiny walking iris'.

I cant find details on how to grow it. Some say it is suppose to be in shade, or a bog, or a water garden. Yet I have it in the sun, dryish soil, and fairly rootbound. Can anyone tell me how to grow this iris and if it is a Louisiana iris, or what type it is?

Is it suppose to put out plantlets like a walking iris? Or is it a fluke? do I leave it on the stem till I see roots? IF roots ever show up? Do I cut it off now and just stick it in soil and it will root? I solved half the I need the other half solved, how to care for it and is it a 'walking iris', or do I have a fluke of nature?

It's a walking iris. People call it the Apostle Plant sometimes, and it grows well in Louisiana, hence the confusion. I believe it is native to South America.

Wait until the pups grow roots, then detach them from the mother plant and plant in regular garden soil. Don't cut off the bloom stalks after the first bloom, since they keep blooming from the same stalk.

I'm not sure about water requirements, but you might try a google search for Apostle Plant.

RE: I Found My Southern Iris !!!!

My iris is long done blooming. It bloomed for like a month. Its first time ever. Next year, now that I know what it is, and can find out how to take care of it, maybe I will get a mass of blooms for months! I only have 1 stem of blooms and got about 5 flowers, one after another. Now I am just waiting for that pup to throw out roots,...if that is what it does. Then I can pot up the mother plant and put it in more shade and better soil. It is already growing like a monster now, so if it gets better conditions, it will go crazy. Boy, one rhizome cost a lot! I have a nice expensive iris 'clump'!

Indeed- I was thinking the same thing- that's a pricey plant. If it's growing well now, I wouldn't move it into too much shade.
