 o
Green Iris seed - will it germinate

Posted by cmmwiebe 2b-3a (My Page) on

I have a very nice seed pod of Diamond Blush but it is still green and I have it standing (long stem) in water. However I am noticing that the pod seems to be rotting rather than ripening. I would like to harvest the seeds but I am thinking they will not be ready.
Any thoughts on harvesting as is?

if the pod is rotting then it would seem to me that by opening it you have nothing to loose! If the pod rots the seeds will rot also. So were it me I would open it and see if the seeds are ready, IMHO

The seed pod needs to ripen on the plant. When the pod has yellowed some people loosely cover it with a baggie to catch seeds when it bursts. Especially if they will be on vacation.

I haven't heard of being able to harvest while still green. Seeds too immature.

Leaving the pod on the plant was not an option at the time! So I guess I have nothing to lose.

how did your zone change from 2 to 10 ....

some hosta hybridizers swear that sugar water will allow time for cut stalks with pods to ripen ... never tried it though ...

at the link .. about half way down .... it says:

"Another way to extend the time is to cut the scapes off and place them in the house in sugar water for awhile. I add about a teaspoon of sugar to a glass of water and in goes the scape. Every few days or so I cut the bottom off the scape and clean it some and replace the sugar water."

i would bet a nickle... whatever works with hosta.. will work with iris.. some of you might be fascinated by the link if you are interested in indoor winter seed growing .... to the extreme.. lol

It seems the default is 10! I saw it later but......

You can see the seeds over on Gardenbuddies. The larger pod was opening up - drying out I think. The seeds look good so I will try them.
