You have done good in leaving on a lot of dirt. I would certainly put them right back in the ground, as long as it isn't frozen and you can dig a hole. Personally, I wouldn't cover them with mulch - they probably won't even realize they have been moved. Marvin E.

You can set the iris and dirt bundles into boxes and keep them dry in the garage until you move. You can get good strong boxes at liquor stores, also ask at grocery stores for vegetable and fruit boxes. If you have to line boxes with holes in them, use paper or cloth, not plastic, so it breathes.

You don't have to mulch them, its better to let them dry out, and if they freeze it will not hurt them. Just set them aside and dig the rest up and when you move you can stack the boxes up. You can write the name of the variety right on the box.

You could have washed them off and left them bare root in a box or paper bag, as long as they are open to the air and stay dry, they will be fine. Good luck.

A few years ago we had to move between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The ground was frozen and I had to build new beds at our new home to put them in. I just dug them up with a digging fork and stuck them in the back of the pickup with whatever dirt was frozen to the roots. We had a very decent bloom the next summer.
