| As I upload the updated listing of Historic Iris for 2010, it has been getting more difficult to get companies to impart on information of what historic Irises they are growing. Some companies that grow historics are slowing giving way to moderns and a few companies are closing down their shops after many years of doing business. I even had a small argument with Kelly Norris, AIS Bulletin Editor, stating that what I was doing was "redundant and a waste of time" since supposedly HIPS already does this.
As a HIPS member, I know this to be false. Otherwise, I would not be doing this. More and more, I'm finding myself getting disgruntled compiling this list since many companies are not cooperative, but the way I look at it is this: if I stop now, the only things getting hurt are the Iris that are endangered. Of course, this is against everything we at HIPS are about.
As of yet, the only company that has truly updated their historic listing for 2010 is Superstition Iris Gardens. The rest of the gardens I have updated on their most recent listing I have to include 1980 introductions. I will be doing minor updates, as they update their own listing for the 2010 season.
I have added seven "new" iris companies to the listing, five of which I have tried last year: Breezeway Iris Garden, Echo Iris Garden, IrisGal.Com, Matthews Iris Garden, Stanton Iris Gardens, The Iris Patch and Williamson Farm Flowers. I am excited at the many rarities they are offering. These companies are in bold-face.
Sadly, there were only 129 introductions from 1980 added to the list. More of an indication that I personally believe that the cut-off date for historic Iris should be at least 25, if not 20 years, rather than 30. Nonetheless, I hope this list proves to be an invaluable tool in obtaining your historic treasures.
Happy Browsing,
Carlos Ayento

What would be the point of having a list if it was only available if you are a member of an Iris Society. The more people who know where to buy Irises from, the better for the promotion of Irises and its free.People who find themselves in media positions within Iris societies should take the time out and read an article by Clay Shirky "Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable" and perhaps they might just pause and reflect. Keep up the good work Carlos Regards Terry Johnson Heritage Irises http://historiciris.blogspot.com/ |

Well gee, the posts by me and irisgal are gone- in case you didn't see them, Carlos, we are very grateful for all of your labors. This list was especially fun for me because I could see in an instant the popular oldies and add them to my list. Thanks, Carlos. Renee |

| Thanks for all your work, Carlos. I'm new to historic iris and not a member of a society, so this is very helpful to all us newbies out here. :-) |

Carlos, Thank you for doing this list again & again. I think the person you were "arguing" with must not realize that it is YOU who do this for HIPS! I've been off chasing daylily stuff for quite a few months and am just now checking in on iris again. I was delighted to see your post and to see that you've been able to add some more vendors to the list. Your efforts are very appreciated. I hope you will be encouraged to continue this. It is truly a gallant effort to keep us aware of those endangered cultivars. |

| Carlos, thank you for what you're doing. It takes real dedication to do this work. Sometimes, don't forget, people are not open to new ideas because they feel threatened in some way -- I'm not saying this is the case, but it's possible. So, keep on going. Keep doing what you're doing. |

| is this list a compilation of any/all historics available for sale? because if so that would be wonderful. some places don't have historics listed as historics, they're just grouped among the others so someone who doesn't know all of the historics may not realize what they have. thank you for doing this, if i could afford the membership to HIPS i would join. if i was American i'd be very active in it. if only.... |

| Thanks so much, Carlos. I'm not brand new to historic iris, but relatively new and this list has been hugely helpful. A couple of questions, though. First, my own database of historic iris (I only collect those registered prior to 1955) lists numerous varieties (which ARE available from sources) which are not on your list. Why would that be? Also, is there a list somewhere of contact information for the sources you list, especially the newer ones? Perhaps I just missed it? Thanks SO much for what you do. I am committed to making sure these beautiful irises do not disappear and am excited there are so many others with the same committment. This list is SO much more comprehensive than what I have found from HIPS, so that person doesn't seem to realize how important your work is! |

| Ashes_of_the_fire -- it costs only $10 to join HIPS. If you're really interested and really can't afford the $10, email me and I'll pay for a membership for you. Ginny |
