The rock pathway through the gateway to the seating area is finally done. Dang, that mortar is tricky stuff to work with.

Very nice, Steve - I like it. Now I'm starting to imagine it with gravel in place of the bit of lawn on the right, and a big, tall rock set in the gravel next to this end of the Machiai.... Herb

Thanks Herb
I agree- that little patch is a pain in the rear. Ill undertake that one next- less lawn is ALWAYS a good thing!

btw...what is the correct pronunciation of Machiai?

Steve

Steve -

I say this with some trepidation because my authority is the JOJG - but according to them it's pronounced MAH-chi-eye.

It's just occurred to me that an alternative to gravel might be moss. On the other hand even if moss will grow there, gravel's a lot quicker.

But the site's so eye-catching that I couldn't resist experimenting with it - Click here

Wow! My garden has been officially "Herb-alized"!

I really like the moss and since I live in a rainforest, moss growth is not a problem. I think Ill give it a try. I did also like the river rock idea so maybe will combine the two ideas.

Cheers
Steve

That's certainly one advantage to living in rainforest! Victoria (in summer anyway) - can be like semi desert unless we water all the time.

And after trying your picture with only moss added, I agree with you. I think any of the bigger rocks that I'd inserted would detract from the effect of the moss. -

Looks great Steve! I bet your knees are sore, but it sure was worth it.

That looks great. I am going to keep it as an idea for my back yard.
