ideas for this maple?

| This is a new house we moved into late this summer. We are looking for suggestions regarding this maple. It seems out of place in the yard-lone lollipop. We are trying to decide whether to incorporate it, and how, or take it down. We've thought of a bed of groundcover going around and out and lining the street edge. The house was built in the early 70s so expect this tree is about that old. The base trunk is about 8-10" diameter.

If it was my tree and house I'd not even consider taking it down. I would trim the inner branches to give a see through affect. I would try some sort of ground cover under the tree and maybe some stone steps up the house from the area under the tree.
I WOULD take out the shrubs that are close to the house. I would replace them with blue rug juniper or similar in order to make that side of the house feel larger.
