I am taking a one day long class thru our local botanical garden (in the u.s. ) by one of the instructors who teaches at the above school in Japan.
Has anyone taken a class at this institute in Kyoto and or a class from Marc Peter Keane ?
Thanks.

If I were anywhere near, I would trip over myself signing up for his class. If you want an idea of his grasp of Japanese gardening, or for that matter, Japan, read his books. Otherwise, read his books anyway! The Art of Setting Stones, for instance, has little to do with setting stones. It does embody an essence of Japan by sharing moments of enlightenment from rare personal experiences. Although my hunger for technical information was left want, I was more than compensated with these visions. I send this book to those I want to share what I felt to be the ‘soul’ of Kyoto. In his book on Japanese garden design, (can’t remember the title right now and supper is ready) he shares thoughts on historical origins, draws connections from these influences to Japanese garden periods, and then how they might be applied to current garden construction. Good reference. No I don’t work for him, nor have I even met him! But I would like to hear from anyone who has read these books, and from you if you attend the lecture!

Kobold, If you cut and paste the url address that I posted in my opening post you will be linked to the website that has much information on the seminar offered by The Research Center for Japanese Garden Art. The more I read and reread the information on their website , the more I am inclined to sign up for the course. I think I will have a clear and concise decision made once I hear Marc Peter Keane speak at the upcoming Jan. 29, 2005 symposium in San Francisco. In the mean time, I have filled out the application and have requested more information on the 2 week long symposium. |

Hi Michelle; Mr. Keane has said "there is no such thing as a Japanese Garden" . After hearing him explain why and after reading his books, I tend to agree with him. For a lot of reasons well beyond this thread. He helped me put my head on straight, now I focus more on "terroir" than on recreating something I found in a book. His thinkings are a lot in parallel to the late James Rose. He is very knowledgable and very approachable. I am sure you will learn a lot from him. BTW, there is another way to go to Kyoto this summer. http://summer-sessions.ucdavis.edu/abroad/c_lda191_japan.htm Thinking of seeing him in Portland on the 30th. My narrow myopic view of gardening precludes me from appreciating the other speakers but I would gladly pay the admission just to see Mr. Keane again. Michael

I sure would like to see how Keith Wiley practices naturistic style in front of an audience! heh heh Sorry Mich, couldn't resist the naturist thang in your last speaker on the list... :D What a treat to get to hear our own Bahia give a presentation at such a cool seminar!

It is always a treat to hear David speak whether on horticultural topics or anything else for that matter. The first time I met Senor Bahia was when he was doing a slide show talk for the Succulent and Bromeliad Society at the Strybing Arboretum. He was showing gorgeous slides of places that he has traveled to that were jammed packed with 'succulent' horticultural treats. I have since heard him speak at various horticultural events sponsored thru the California Hort Society, On the various Hortisexuals tours and events , at the Arboretum and in writing here on The GardenWeb. He is an excellent speaker and when using slides to illustrate a point , they are beautifully composed and in perfect focus. He is considered "The" Horticulturist's Horticulturist. While on the last Hortisexual trip down to L.A., he was the most sought after person in our wild and crazy group for horticultural identification. And that says a lot considering whose who in that group.. ( some of the most knowledgable and talented horticulturists on both the east and west coast ) >>>> ( as a matter of fact Cady, I think you will be speaking with one of the east coast editorial Hortisexuals soon ) ,, good luck ! we'll put a good word for you. <<<<<<< ! >

Yama Sensei; Thank you for thinking of me. Not going to Japan this year. When I do go again, I will spend more time with gardens in the North due to a larger percentage of relatives there (AKA very reasonable room and board) When I do go, I will ask you about natto, pachinko, and your innermost feelings about the Harajuku girls..... BTW, trying to incorporate "kine" and "usu" into the garden. For culinary purposes only. Michael
