There's an interesting collection of lanterns at this site.
In the case of one of the pictures (the one with the water wheel) I wonder if it is a lantern?

LOL! After reading what the JOJG keeps saying about red bridges, every time I see a picture of a garden in Japan with a red bridge it seems to jump out at me too.

And to illegal, immoral, and fattening, add politically incorrect - with politically incorrect being the most enjoyable of all.....
