Help!!! Need Advice on Jap. Maples

I live in Roanoke, VA zone 6b-7a and am planning to plant (along a 40 foot fence) a row of japanese maples. They will be shaded by 2 large maple trees and one Cleveland pear about 1/2 of the day in the afternoon. I don't especially like the mounding or weeping types but I like the upright varieties. Any suggestions for varieties that are really spectacular in color spring and/or fall? I have been researching a lot of different kinds and my head is absolutely swimming!!!! Can't make a decision. I don't care if the trees are crowded & would like to cram in as many as possible in the 40 ft. space.
I am considering Omurayama, Wou Nishiki, Beni Tsukasa. However, I don't want to plant anything hard-to-grow or prone to disease or likely to fail here as these trees are very pricey!!

Why not use the species tree like they do in Japan. Simple and beautiful.

I don't even know what a species jap maple is. And after looking through dozens of past posts - I can see this site is way too esoteric for me - going back to the Maple forum!

No offense, but you folks might want to think twice about using the "jap" term. It is considered to be a racial slur by many people, including myself.

Wow!!! Are you serious?????? Certainly NO OFFENSE was intended - and I meant for a period to be after the jap. - it was simply an abbreviation.

I also find that term to be offensive. So does my wife, who is Japanese. It is surprising how often that term is used in public in a derogatory way.

In regard to maples, I'd vote for the species tree, too.

I don't know how to make this any more clear - I meant the jap to be jap. which was simply an abbreviation for japanese. Just an abbreviation, not a racial slur at all. Or are people offended by jap. as an abbreviation for japanese????

Off the teppan, into the fire.
Try the abbreviation "jn."

Well, after some research on the net I am convinced you people are not oversensitive kooks and even jap with a period is to be avoided. Where I live there are almost no Japanese so I am not familiar with the slur. Hontouni gomennasai(learned that on my search). From now on my lazy typing will abbreviate it to j.-which is even easier!!!

Sue, don't sweat it. This thing has popped up at least twice in the past year. We all learn as we go.
