What about pruning roots with heavy spades to slow top growth?

Niwa ki or ueki is same gereral term of trees. when write with alphabet, ki or gi is big different. but write with Chinese chracter it is same.Most peoples pronunce niwaki or ueki however. Any trees or shurbs in garden are niwaki or Ueki.
To Controle growth , roots pruing is one way, pruing, injure mildly tree trunk also work. some furits trees, weistria , "how to do it" is depend on trees.

You need the book NIWAKI, by Jake Hobson, an English sculptor who spent some time working in a Japanese nursery. Check out www.niwaki.com. Great pix, terrific book! Good explanations with drawings.
Basically,it's a matter of training and pruning (and not root pruning, as in bonsai). Pretty simple, really, once you know how, but it does take some practice. And guts! Most people would say 'Prune a conifer? No way!'
The effect is really stunning, in my opinion tho not everyone agrees.
