How to plant a Japanese Threadleaf Maple

I recently purchased a Green Japanese Threadleaf Maple and am having some trouble figuring out how to plant it. When looking at the trunk in relation to the ball, the trunk is not straight. It is in a diagonal direction to the ball, up and to the right if that makes sense. My question is this: Was it balled that way on purpose because when planted the trunk is not suppose to be straight, or was it balled sloppy and when in the ground the trunk should be straight. It would not be hard to plant it with the trunk straight, but there is a standard to how a Japanese Maple should traditionally look when planted.

I suppose it depends on what form you want, curved and weeping or more upright. It sounds as if either by design or accident it wants to be curved. If you want it to be more upright, you may have to stake it.

Can you ask where you bought it why it is growing that way?

I purchased it at a local garden center. Typically, there plant stock is above average. Having spent time in the landscaping industry, I know that sometimes the tree nurseries can get a little sloppy with the B & B process and you get an ugly ball.

I guess its really my choice.
