Acer palmatum‘Gwen’s Rose Delight’ not budding yet

Last spring I planted a gorgeous Gwen's Rose Delight/Shirazz JM that did very well throughout the summer and fall. The tree was caged and mulched for winter. My concern is that so far I have not seen any leaf buds coming out from the branches but spotted a few red sprouts very low on the trunk yesterday.

There were a few branch tips that had winter kill I trimmed off and at first that seemed like the extent of the damage. Our neighbor has a BG that is not budding out yet either so perhaps I just need to be patient and hope for some progress in the next week or two. I thought perhaps it will just bud a bit later since it is in a cooler zone than it should be? Any opinions/suggestions/thoughts? My one year warranty will be up on 5/23 (if they even honor it).

Thanks!

Tammy

All our Japanese Maples are already in full leaf for a month. We had a very warm and early spring.
It all depends on climate.... so best to compare with your surrounding for this.
The fact that your neighbors Acer is not budding out yet either is probably the good news.

Thanks, Piet! I pruned back the tree hard today and found some green so I am hoping it bounces back to its former glory!
