Crimson Queen Japanese Maple Dying

I am in Jackson Miss i planted a crimson queen maple last fall, we had snow last year and a hard freeze i was sure it died but it came out beautifully for about a week. Then the leaves started dying and it just looked burned and its not even hot here yet. The trunk now is starting to look not so green so i dug it up and put it in a pot. The place i had it planted does get afternoon sun but thats the frnt of my house. So i have 2 questions should i have left the tree alone, i felt like it would have been dead shortly and will probably die anyway but i now have it in shade to see if it comes back. Ive seen plenty of these planted in full sun that are very thick and beautiful, what am i doing wrong.
