Red Japanese Maple (Acer)

I planted a small japanese maple last fall. In March we got a really warm spell and the tree started to bud and than it got really cold again. Now the tree has leafs on the bottom half of the tree and the top half of the tree has dead buds. I don't know what to do about the top half.
Should I prune the top half and see if any new buds come? It is a weeping japanese maple so the hook of the tree that hangs down is nothing but dead buds and branches. I did cut some of the branches to see if they were alive, but I don't think so. The branches don't snap, but there is no green on them either. Please Help!!!!!!!!! |

| This happened to mine also. I waited until the tips started to brown and the rest of the tree was leafed out just to make sure they were goners. Then I trimmed the dead part off. It didn't bother them and they are fully leafed out and growing now. |
