Help with Dwarf JM

Hi all - I recently purchased a Dwarf Japanese Maple for $40 from a local nursery that was going out of business.
For me I knew right away I had to save this tree - It is somewhat sparse as the place is no longer taking care of the inventory...

I would greatly appreciate some advice as to how to save or revitalize this possible gem...I purchased on 5/15 and have since fertilized with fish oil..

RE: Help with Dwarf JM

Looks like a 'Crimson Queen' or a 'Red Dragon' at that price.
Did you put fish OIL on or fish fertilizer?
You got it at a fair price since it was on sale.
1. Leave the lower branch on, do not prune it for a long while since it will help with trunk development.
2. It has likely been ignored so after deep watering fertilize it with acid fertilizer only after deep watering.
3. Take it out of the can and see if it is root bound with girdling roots and if so root prune and move up to one size larger pot with fresh acid potting mix if you are leaving it in a container or fresh acid planting mix if going into the ground.
arnie...
