Dwarf Japanese Maple Trimming

My daughter bought a house a couple of years ago and in the front is a Dwarf Japanese Maple bush/tree. It is only 18 inches high but has spread out 3-4 feet wide. It has grown a lot over the last few years and it is interfering with her driveway and with cutting the grass. How do you trim it? Do you trim it like a shrub? We have know idea on how to take care of it.

Move it when the tree is dormant. It doesn't have enough room to realize it's potential, and cutting it back will ruin the branching pattern.
