container for Japanese maples

My husband bought be a beautiful Sango kaku coral bark Japanese maple a couple months ago. We are renting at the moment so I will be needing to grow it in a container for a year or two til we can buy a house (hopefully no longer than that) it's about six feet tall right now. I keep reading it's good to slowly increase the container size, so I'm wondering what size pot would be good to start with?

Also when is the best time to re-pot?
