I've had Japanese Yews as a hedge in front of the house for 25 to 30 years. They have always been beautiful. This past month they have started to die along the front and across the top. Needles just turning brown and branch breaks off easily as when dead. what could be causing this?

Yews require excellent drainage, are prone to root rot. Maybe there has been a change in soil conditions on the site. This could include a water mold arriving that was not present earlier.
You see, this is something I don't understand; here we have a fairly defined section of the garden web where we can do the thing on Japanese Gardens which is not so broad as to include anything with 'Japanese' in its title is it?
Depends Ron: 'nearly dying forum' or 'dying yew' perhaps it is all foreign anyway. Describe a Japanese Garden and include a relevant reference to a dying yew, I challenge you.
It does say "This forum is for the discussion of all aspects of designing, creating and maintaining Japanese gardens--including plant choices, design elements and historical information."
Maybe qumum's place is done as a Japanese garden or in that style. We don't know. And somebody who did have a Japanese garden with yews demonstrating the same problem might be quite interested in reading about it here. I see no huge lack of appropriateness.
