Sakaki-Cleyera Japonica-How to care for it?
| | |

I was having a very hard time finding actually grown specimens. There is a seedling nearby but it won't be ready for several months still. At any rate I was able to purchase seeds. Does anyone know how to care for these guys? I want to grow a few for the local Shinto shrine and for myself as well.

Was being offered several years ago by Colvos Creek nursery on Maury Island, near Seattle and Cistus nursery on Sauvie Island, near Portland. Maybe one or both still have it. Both do have web sites, can be shopped in person or ordered from through the mail. Heronswood also had it but probably doesn't now that is has been moved to PA. You might want to check their web site as well, just in case.

Usually your friends down in Oregon (Forestfarm, who is by default every gardener's friend) carry this one, although I don't see it in the current catalog... If you can't find it elsewhere, try calling Forestfarm and ask for it. They often carry plants in small batches that aren't publicized in a current catalog; I've ordered stuff that way myself from them. Anyway, good luck, shouldn't be tough to find one in your area. Hi kimigirl Sakaki and cleyera japonica is different tree. Cleyera japonica is called "mochi" or mochi no ki. Many books mixed up botanical name of sakaki and mochino ki. many tree/plant name are mixed up. Mochi and Sakaki rae one of many. You can find cleyera japonica one gal to 20 gal container. It is not expensive tree. Becouse it is easy to propergate, don't have much of pest problems, tollerate polution, How to maintain the tree in US and Japan is big different. You want to know Japanese way or US way ? ^^. yama

I have cuttings of Sakaki to trade if interested. These were gifts to my ancestor from a Kanushi at O-Isesan since my ancestor was also a Kanushi.
