Mike, I have been interested in the connections between Chinese and Japanese gardens. Many of the same plants, many similar details...but the result is so different. Really fascinating. I'm going to be in Beijing next month. Yesterday's temperature there was 102! All the plants will probably be fried by the time I get there!

You can be sure I'll be looking for gardening books! I brought one home the last time I was in China. I only saw a couple. This time I will have the Chinese characters for "penjing" and "yuan" (garden) written down when I go shopping!

I did find several interesting gardens in Beijing. The Beijing Botanical Garden has an extensive penjing (bonsai) collection. I'd also recommend Prince Gong's Garden (traditional Chinese walled garden), Beihai Park, and Jingshan Park. Here's a link to gardens in Beijing and other cities in China.
