Rain gutter using bamboo

I have seen on some pics of japanese homes that they use large bamboo poles cut in two as rain gutters. And then attach a rain chain to them so the water can flow into the ground or drain....

How common is this in japan? I have built a roof over my deck, and now its time to put the rain gutters into place. I think making them out of bamboo would be a nice touch indeed. And if I conserve the inner with some kind of sealant it should be pretty durable.

Why let the bamboo contact the water at all? You could easily line it with roofing rubber, sheet copper, asphaltum, etc.
