Info on how to prune trees and shrubs

Posted by Skyridgegarden z5 MO (My Page) on

I am looking for a source of info, either book or website that shows how to prune conifers and other plants in the Japanese garden style. I would like to learn the basics as well as advanced methods. Do I need to look into Bonsai books?

Thanks

I recommend that you subscribe to the Journal of Japanese Gardening. They have pruning articles in almost every issue.

Skyridgegarden,
if you put 'pruning pine' into the search field on this site, 2 pages of posts will come up. You could also try pruning maple etc.

For basics of pine pruning, I do not know of any books in English suitable for Japanese styles. Bonsai Today's "Pines", although written for bonsai, can give you an introduction to pine physiology - a requisite for training healthy pines! It covers black and white pines.

For pines that are already somewhat shaped, check out the link below for maintainance info. Here is a related link for maple http://www.botanysaurus.com/jg/prunemaples.html
