Top one looks like the backside may be getting too hot in summer, since the discoloration is all on the back. Laceleaf maples, having abnormally slender leaf segments are more prone to weather conditions than those with normal leaves. The 'Crimson Queen' may have gotten too hot and or dry. The paleness of the rest of it would certainly imply that the site is too blazing for it, one of the selling points of this cultivar is that it keeps a good purple color all summer. For it to become that faded it is either the wrong variety or the wrong situation.

Thanks for responding bboy! "Crimpson Queen" looks like will not make it but will not know until next year for sure.
