I did design and build my garden shed. Most of my "designs" are based on what I have (I had some materials left over from the garden wall) and where it would be placed. Other aspects (for example the door -- which is a spar-varnished bamboo curtain, backed by a vinyl sheet) arose out of both simplicity and what was around.
I fit things together as I am building -- not the most engineering-like procedure, but it works for me.
The frame is 2x4 lumber stained brown. The outside walls are plywood (primed and painted with 2 or 3 coats of outdoor paint). The roof is plywood with cedar shingles over it.
