8x8 area surrounded by house

| I would like to make a 8'x8'area into a tiny Japanese garden. One side is open to the lawn with rocks stacked to make a barrier. 2 sides are exterior walls of the house. The last side is pure windows - the wall of my sun room. I want to have plants that will not touch the windows or walls of the house and that will look pretty from the sun room. I hope that you will have suggestions for me.
I currently have a small banana tree in the middle of the area that (unfortunately) dies down every year in the winter. |

| Japanese banana (Musa basjoo)? If it did well it would fill the whole space in short order. Maybe you should move that out of there so some less bold plant(s) could be featured instead. A nice simple statement would be moss and a laceleaf Japanese maple. Since these unnatural looking versions of Acer palmatum do not often blend well with other plants an area such as yours is an excellent opportunity to feature and view one in isolation. The sculptural quality of the branching pattern of a specimen that has developed to a sufficient extent provides yearround interest. |

| See if you can find a copy of " A Japanese Touch for your Garden" by Seike Lots of good pictures and ideas there. Dave |

| What an exciting opportunity! I hope you will post pictures when you get it done. A friend and I have spent many hours fantasizing about what we would do if we ever got a space like that. She almost bought a Rummer, for just this reason., You are lucky : ) |

| Very nice links! My wife and I are in the process of buying our first home with a little land .3099 acre and we want to do a small garden area dedicated to her home country Japan. We havent decided on how much of the area we are going to use for it, but it seems like 8X8 would be quite sufficent, maybe a little more. We cant really do standing water because here in the south (Georgia) we have a very serious problem with mosquitos. Any other suggestion on good decor and where I can get this decor would be most helpful! |
