setting up a jap garden in a mediterranean climate

hi all,
I am in the planning stages of setting up a japanese (style) garden , it will be 10m long x 3m wide.
I live in a mediterranean climate very hots summers , mild winters (no snow). the garden is in a north east position and gets a reasonable amount of sun (4-8hrs) each day. I am setting the garden up directly outside my office so when i get overwhelmed with life I can go out and rake the gravel and take 15mins out for some meditation. what I am looking for is ideas and inspiration from you. also could someone suggest the odd climber or vine type plant that I could grow to trail over a gate/fence that would add visual interest but look authentic in a jap style type garden.
many thanks in advance

Problem here is what grows under your conditions and has desired appearance. Try Australian forum, describing particular visual characters you are after.
