My Japanese maples trunks are turning dark brown

I have a Lions head and a Coal bark JM and both trunks are turning a dark brown starting at ground level. Are they dying? The Lions head's leaves are brown (we've had high heat and drought)but the Coral bark still has green leaves. They are both in moderate sunlight. I am concerned that they have a fungus, bacterial or viral infection.

Yes, it might be pathogenic but your description is not nearly adequate to make a diagnosis.
