pleioblastus viridistriatus and Jap Maples- compatible???

Bamboo and Japanese garden aficionados!: i was creating a new garden area in my mind today but I need your vital input. I am thinking of a small grove of Japanese maples in a sea of pleioblastus viridistriatus. Do you know if jap.maples can handle being engulfed by that wondrous running critter? This area is under a lg.silver maple; open light shade. For the past 5 yrs, it has been inhabited by 2 6'jap maples and a sea of hosta which are all doing fine.
I could plant the bamboo in pots but would not go to the bother if not necessary.
I appreciate your thoughts.
Mindy

| Would look great under purpleleaf ones. If you don't want it to spread indefinitely use root barrier. Don't, however do anything that would interfere with the natural spread of the Japanese maple roots. |

It might not be a good idea. I have had nothing but bad experiences with small running bamboos. Their spread is relentless so a barrier is definitly called for. I would think the bamboo roots would dominate the area where it is planted to the detriment of the Japanese maples. Aren't large Silver maples prone to splitting limbs due to ice and snow? That could spell disaster for the Japanese maples under it. |

Botann. woops. Unlike seattle or most part of Georgia, Bamboo don't grow fast as Ga or Washington state. zone 5, winter of Inland of Mas kill to new growth and dond spread fast as bamboo in Ga or any area of zone 7 or above. mike |

yama, I agree with you on the spread. I planted a 1 gallon pot of pleioblastus viridistriatus 4 years ago and it now covers an area 2 feet in diameter. I do not have any small bamboos that are spreading as fast as I would like and some of them have been in the ground for 7 years. Bill |

| Yes Mike, the bamboo would spread a lot slower in Massachusetts than here or Georgia and might not be as much of a problem as I first thought. If successful, the planting would look nice. I like contrasts that work. Try it out Mindy. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain from it. I spent a few weeks in Ma. a few years ago and really enjoyed it, especially the Arnold Arboretum and the Stockbridge area in the Berkshires. |
