Ryokan

I have just picked up a book called "Ryokan: a Japanese tradition", so far I have only looked at the pictures that I find quite fascinating. The text was written in German by Gabriell Fahr-Becker and recently translated into English.
On the first page she quotes Saul Bellow "Here I found what I had hoped to find in Japan - human equilibrium, calm and elegant proportions."
Has anyone stayed at one of the inns, or read the book?

RE: Ryokan

I have stayed in a number of ryokan. Like hotels and motels there are many different types of ryokan, from basic home style to very elegant types. On the whole, staying at a ryokan is like going back in time. Initially greeted and introduced to the owner and the staff, then you are lead to your room and served tea. time to relax and enjoy the surrounding. Breakfast and Dinner is frequently included in the price. Often there is a furo in or in the neighborhood of the ryokan. Taking time to relax in the furo is wonderful.
It is a good opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and soaking in subtle cultural innuendos and customs is informative and nurturing.

Where did you find the book?
I checked only Amazon, but they don't have it.
I would like to buy it.

We might have the opportunity to visit our friends in Japan. They came to Europe to see us ( you know where ), enjoyed horseback riding so much, now they have a horses at home.

Thanks Ron, nothing special, just if it was worth it or not.

BTW we have a saying in the family "..we regret only the trips we didn't take.." Same for the books, we regret only the missed ones. On top of it, I just can't get rid of any books I have, reorganizing the house constantly to have more bookshelves.
