| Was on the general market in recent years but have not seen any here lately. Not the kind of thing you are going to be able to grow from free or cheap cuttings supplied by another hobbyist. As I understand it grown commercially by cutting adventitious buds out of the stems of stock plants and grafting these onto typical seedlings of the species. Or using some other comparatively low return method that results in even 5 gallon pot size specimens costing over 100 dollars by the time they are in retail outlets. Grown on this continent for a fairly long time yet I know of no large specimens. One of the bigger ones I have seen personally grew above head height and then appeared to begin to deteriorate, with the foliage declining and green-leaved suckers from the rootstock popping up around it. This may be a common scenario and may perhaps account for a lack of reports of larger, older specimens. On the other hand I think this and the yellow-variegated form are continuing to maintain themselves and grow ever larger in the Heronswood collection near Kingston, WA. |
