Hello all-
I am a lurker here -more active on other forums but have long admired your gardens and good advice. I have a small pine that I want to start training into a "cloud-pruned" form - I may be using the wrong terminology but I think I have also seen the style labeled as "hindu-pan"? I would love to find a comprehensive how-to link on the internet as I assume this to be a committed endeavor, not just a 1-2-3 tutorial but I may be wrong. Any help would be appreciated. |

| There is a recent book called "Niwaki" by Jake Hobson about all types of Japanese garden pruning. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Niwaki: Pruning, Training, Shaping Japanese Garden Trees

Hi Zj. Normaly we wait pintree reach to 10-12 feet tall to train the tree. It is depend on shape you like to have. as normal size of garden tree( your pine tree),don't start to train to early. Since your are in TN, you will find many pinetrees in vacant lot, in feild, go to one of those place and practice. Fist 3 years or so applentices couldn't touch coustmoer's pine tree in old time.To train pine tree, developing form need take other kill as well such as knot, how to tie, know how to use comealong, spliting branch with pincher etc. Book can provide you so little to gain skills you need to have to train pinetree. Buy the book ixbrown provide you and go out to find pine trees in feild and prctice, practice and practice. Once you find what you don't know, or how then you can make your question specificly. That way you will get better response . There is no way to some one can answer to your questions, nor provide you informations you need in internet. yama |

Many thanks to both of you for your input. The book is a terrific start with basic information which is most helpful. I understand that gardeners can make a life's work in perfecting this art so I did not mean to diminish it by wanting a quick how-to -----just a starting place for basics and the book is great. Thanks again and I will practice, yama - very good advice. Zack |

Hi Zach Many of Japanese style pruning are thining out branch twigs, leave. When you prune trees shurb You have to have right tools and you must able to keep it sharp your self. It is lot's of leaning but it is fun. When you prune pine tree, buy inexpensive cotton glove and cut off tip. Don't just lurk ! partipate ^^. You will get better response. yama. |
