Feeding Advice for Newbie

Hi, I just bought a house in Phoenix which has a koi pond. Well, that's what they call it, but I believe it is home to only several goldfish of varying types, some being as much as 11 years old, and the biggest being no more than maybe 9 inches long at the most. The previous owners told me they only fed the goldfish every two or three days, but the food they gave me (Wardley's) says to feed them two or three times per day. I don't want to starve them -- which is correct?
