In the past when we've put new smaller Koi in our ponds, they do the same thing and my thinking is that they are "learning the ropes" of their new territory.

It's a case of survival. Animal thinking is group together with a large (bunch) because: 1. Predator can't make one shape of prey from another piece of meat. 2. Maybe predator will be "scared" off by largeness of prey 3. Larger target will be focused on first, so I being smaller, can swim away from the attack.

And no I'm not a fish whisperer...
Just a person who's spent too much time diving and observing these behaviors.
