gardening in gravel

Okay, this is kinda weird...but...

I had a dog run down one side of the garden. I put in about 6" of gravel over the grass, and fenced it off. Worked great for the dogs, but now the dogs and the fence are gone, and I really don't feel like removing all the gravel.

Last year some cleome seeded itself in the area, and I had a few that grew to 5' in height and bloomed like mad. They seriously out-performed the self seeded ones that had landed in the good (amended, tended, fluffed) soil in the flower beds.

I think it might be fun to broadcast seed into all the gravel and let it go wild. What I would like is some suggestions for seeds to broadcast. Obviously more cleome, and probably cosmos...any other bright ideas?

Cosmos would be great, and there are high and low varieties. Love-in-a-mist might work; I've had that pop up in soil that I think is useless. You might try good old morning glory, even though there is no fence, it might be a wild kind of cover. And what about good old rubekia --- that stuff is so very hardy! Good luck and keep warm.

One other thing --- there's a book called derek jarman's garden, which shows a strange and wonderful garden that is primarily in gravel. This may help too.
