Home Made foam seed starters

The seed starters very popular in garden catalogs made of foam really worked well but they are not inexpensive. So this year having a good supply of 3 inch foam, I made my own. First I tried cutting with a small knife, no good. Knowing how easy it is to cut by heat, I borrowed my husbands large soldering iron(don't tell) and cut lots of pots into the styrofoam. The iron cleaned up nicely so all is well. All at no cost.

Good idea but do it in a well venitlated area...plastic smoke is toxic.

Another way it can be done is to use the end of a hollow metal rod or anything like that. I have some old craft-type paint brushes with rolled metal handles that are open at the end that work great!. Set the container on a sturdy wood surface and tap it with a small hammer to "punch" the holes.

I knew the smoke would be a problem so I did it outside. Now I would like to find some inexpensive or free 4 to 5 inch foam.

Betsy, look in phone book, if you can find some place that sells foam for bed, boat seats etc, they usually have alot of waste, scraps left over that they bale up and sell These bales weigh like 100#s, but just ask if you can have some of the smaller scraps before its baled up, and you may get some pretty reasonable....worth a try...

Find an upholstery shop and ask for scrap foam. My dad used to be an upholsterer, and he always had plenty of scrap foam.

Is uphostery foam what you want? I thought these seed starters are made of rigid foam, the kind used for insulation. I think oldherb has the right idea of using a thin walled metal tube to punch the holes. I don't know what the advantage of these starters is over other types of containers, but lots of folks find they work well.
