| Every plant is an experiment when you grow from kitchen leftovers.
I wondered if a hacked down piece of fennel bulb would root, so I toseed it in water. It's is putting up lacey leaves, now.
Last year I had a bare spot in a planter and a beet trying to root in the refrigerator. I put them together and got a lovely leafy ornamental-looking plant. I expected it do die over the winder, but it survived and thrived and last week we had yummy beet greens sauteed in olive oil with garlic with our dinner.
I didn't now that beet roots push up into a cone that rises above the soil for several inches, but they do. And then, I seem to remember reading somewhere that you could chop oneoff at the top and the plant will regrow. So I did.
Then I looked at that hairy chunk that I had in my hand and at that thriving fennel bulb and wondered...
T now have several pieces of beetroot, each of which seems to have air roots growing from it, sitting in a leftover plastic container of water.
A continual supply of salad and cooking greens that grow well here, in spite of critters and desert climate would be most welcome!
I'll report back on this one, for sure.
