I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but I don't really know how or where to start?

I have used gallon milk bottles with a multiple of holes drilled in the lid, worked great and was cheap.

You might buy a new (unused) paint can, & put lots of small holes in the bottom. Fill it, and carry it around by the handle, or carry the hole in the other hand and water as you go.
