My only thought is that I think that Festuca is a clumper. Most lawn grasses also spread by runners (like daylillies). I think to get the density of a "Lawn" you need that extra spread. BUT, since most clumpers never get mowed, they might not have a reason to spread with runners. Let us know Greg

I've thought about a blue fescue lawn for a long time and may get around to trying it soon. There are some fine textured clumping grasses which grow wild here in the sandy soil and are attractive. One idea for getting coverage from a clumping grass would be to leave it unmown for a while and let it self seed. Jim

I have some blue fescue growing in my yard, I can't describe it as lawn. :-) The fescue escapes readily from large clumps. I haven't bothered to remove it and it seems pretty tough. Not soft under foot but that might not matter. I much prefer my creeping thyme and would like that to spread a lot faster.
