Tammy, I note that you received an excellent answer to your question on the Container Forum complete with directions and pictures. Have you tried your idea yet? If so, how is it working? |

Tammy, loved the idea and will be using it as soon as I see strawberry plants for sale. My biggest question, any ideas on how to mulch this for overwintering? Carrie |

No I havent tried it yet.I have been waiting for our major landscaping project in the backyard to be done.Looks like it will be started next week.i did talk to a greenhouse the other day and asked them about the possibility of the plants freezing since they were in a tube instead of burried. They said there shouldnt be a problem. But now that i think about it,they produce runners along the top of the ground that doesnt freeze. Please let me know if you try this with the plastic pipe and how it works out.Seems like it would be better than the hanging thingies you buy. | I took a 55 gallon barrel, cut holes in the sides (two rows evenly spaced), put a sewer pipe with holes in the sides in the middle of the barrel so I could water evenly from top to bottom. Filled with potting soil, planted strawberries in the holes in the sides and also planted in the top. Did wonderfully---no bugs in the berries---no dirt in the berries. My only problem was that the potting soil would rot or settle and would draw the plants on the sides down inside of the barrel. Waiting for cooler weather to remove all plants and replace the potting soil with regular old dirt. The concept is the same as the tube. |
