What can I plant to cover bare areas around plants, after I have pulled out the weeds? I imagine a low-ground-cover, colorful, perhaps fragrant, and possibly serving other purposes, like being edible. I also imagine something that is aggressively preventing other, unsightly stuff from growing, under, and around the plant.

Any suggestions appreciated. I did order "Creeping Thyme," but not sure if that would work? I live in Hawaii, rains alot, then dry for days, then more rain...By the way, anyone know what zone Hawaii is. I looked it up, but coming up with conflicting info, or maybe my ignorance.
