covering a mound

I have a mound, possibly 35 feet across, and 6 foot high, with a few plants growing on it. I envision some kind of pretty groundcover, that is lovely, and wonderfully fragrant, possibly repelling all the flies, and ticks, but attracting toads and lizards.

Edibleness, is a major plus. I do have Purslane seeds, and Creeping Thyme, but not sure how that might work. I suppose something that would run all over it, with minimal maintenance, but that would allow for other stuff to grow, like some tall flowers....

Any suggestions appreciated.
