Saving Seed from Weird Gardening Season

Usually I don't bother to save seed. This year I may try. We had drought conditions from May onward. My electric bill really spiked with the pump running constantly. Things did get watered but I have white beets and a melon that isn't orange. The beets I don't want to replicate but the melon is interesting. It is very sweet but definitely not orange. There is a tinge of orange at the seed cavity but that's all. Could the location (20 ft from cukes) have caused this? Any chance I could get really sweet melons next year if I save these seeds?

cross pollination sounds right. and its very unpredictable so there's no telling.
