clay and nutrient uptake

I read that clay helps in uptake of positive ions:

ref: http://www.passionflow.co.uk/growingtips.htm

"The clay surface is always negatively charged & the plants can pick up the positive ions easily off the clay surface. Note that in very hot climates clay pots are not practical as they dry out too quickly. Nevertheless broken bits of clay pot can be put in the base of plastic pots."

I have not really seen this anywhere else, and was wondering if this applies to all pots and if this helps in the uptake for all plants. I have also read that pots often have some salt (NaCl) which can be a problem for salt sensitive plants.

This clay pot theme is repeated throughout the site, and I am thinking of breaking some pots to test this. It even said that the roots will even start to go into the clay for this reason.

Any info on this would be great.
