Potatoes inside under lights

| Just an idea I have been playing around with. I have 2 potatoes that have really nice small leaves on them. I wondered if I put them in a pot INDOORS under my plant light system if they would grow a few spuds?? Anyone ever done this?? I usually plant potatoes outside.

Hi DL, I haven't exactly grown potatoes under my grow lights. But, I've grown potatoes in a 18 gallon container that I've moved in and out of my solar glazed shed to grow potatoes in Feburary....so, to answer your question, you probably can with sufficient light and a large enough container to have room for the spuds. ~tom |

| tom_n_6bzone , All I needed was a smidgen of encouragement and....... I had already started to chit the potatoes on a windowsill. I will put them into a container within the next few days. I think GardenWeb should have a Potato forum - or at least a Root Crop forum. This solar glazed shed - tell me more please. DL |

| lol, well, my wording sounded a bit more grandeur than it is. I have an 8X12 shed with the south roof glazed with double walled polycarbonate and it extends to 4 feet from the ground. The inside is thoroughly insulated with R-19 and its tight. I have 220 gallons of water in dull black containers, 5 of them 30 gallons and the rest smaller down to one gallon size and they line the north wall. Above the north wall containers, I've added reflective foil materials and I've made a homemade storm entrance heavy curtains with weights sow in the bottoms. There is a 12 foot long 3 foot wide shelf under the polycarbonate for my plants and seedlings. I began with this last winter and used it like a large cold frame. I've gotten serious with it this winter with the water and insulation! The water thermal mass has kept the inside from freezing so far this winter...all the way down to 12 degrees outside. It's still a glorified cold frame since I add no heat to it, but my ambition is to grow cold hardy vegetables during the winter anyway. ~tom |

| tom_n_6bzone, Sounds like a great greenhouse to me. I may look into getting some water containers to try my version of this. Seems like I saw a TV program about solar heat accumulating during the day to keep a room warm at night. Never thought about using it in gardening. DH is going to ship me to the Moon if I keep up with this experimenting!! DL |
